ICEND - Interactive, Communicative, Experiential, and Network Development.

 

ICEND - A Term that David Boje and Michael Jones coined in 1982 to develop a story-based model of TD. The ICEND theory is that by convening people to interact, communicate their stories, and form common experience, a network for action and change develops (See Boje, 1982).

 

ICEND Model of Transorganizational Development

Three subsystems are formed. Subsystem One (outside process consultant) facilitates the formation of the second subsystem (internal problem solving networking cycle) so people can crystallize issues, identify leaders, form a temporary organization (of organizations) that will change the status quo response patterns of a TD1 (Subsystem Three: Extended Network Involvement Cycle).

Overview: ©TSI stands for True Storytelling Institute.
                              We do live interactive True Storytelling workshops.
    Mission: To produce modules and certificate programs that partners and those who complete TSI's Trainer of Trainers and/or the Consultant Training program can use in their own work with clients.

    Clients: Our clients are trainers, coaches, and consultants who want to pay for live interactive worskhops in order to learn tools and processes of True Storytelling that can help their own clients overcome th fragmentation of their life, and find the clarity of insight to attain 'True Storytelling' wholeness in organizaitons and communities smitten by the 'story of separation.' We live in a time of transition, and are in-between 'story of seperation' and the potentiality for a 'story of wholeness.' Some TSI founders may have organizations as clients, in order, to do the storytelling fieldwork inquiry necessary for workshop (module) development to facilitate trainsiton from story of separatin to story of wholeness.
   
    Vision: Those who develop TSI modules that are complete with workbook, slide sets, original exercises, and successfully apply the © TSI concepts and principles to our standards of excellence, have a way to be paid a fee for their work. It is like the record industry where a Rock Group develops an album and then each time it is played by others on the air, in a venue making money, a fee is paid back to the record company and to the singers, song writers, and people playing the instruments. At ©TSI we have a way for those working in product development (of modules) can get their fee.  And we have a way to train trainers and consultants to use the modules with their own clients, if and only if, they complete the advanced Trainer of Trainer and/or Consultant training, and sustain our high standards of excellence. Finally, we have a way for people hearing a higher calling to Live a Truly Ethical Life to do graduate level work by earning Truth Seeker certificates.

Racism Live Interactive Workshop Module:



    Our beta workshops are free to test audience, during product development of modules (usually 2 to 4 test runs) that when complete with workshop manual, slide sets by a team of module authors, are submitted for final approval to TSI founders. Then the audience specified to that module is obtained for our marketing and promotion efforts. Each approved module-team helps market their live interactive workshop to the market of trainers, coaches, and consultants, who upon completion of 'Trainer of Trainer' certification, are authorized (licensed) by TSI to teach the module-as-designed to their own clients.

    Here We present the live interactive workshops (modules) and certificate programs, do the module development and offer completed modules to partners, sponsors, and alumni programs.

TRUE STORYTELLING PRINCIPLES ©TSI

          1. Truth: You yourself must be true and prepare the energy and effort for a sustainable future
          2. Make room: True storytelling makes spaces respecting the stories already there
          3. Plot: You must create stories with a clear plot creating direction and help people prioritize
          4. Timing: You must have timing
          5. Help stories along: You must be able to help stories on their way and be open to experiment
          6. Staging: You must consider staging including scenography and artifacts
          7. Reflecting: You must reflect on the stories and how they create value
    What is True Storytelling? Amidst the noise and cacophonous business storytelling, our mission is get closer to answering basic existential questions? How to live and ethical life? How to be truthful in organizations that too often are not?  How to overcome estrangement from our own self, from nature, from one another and from the meaning of life. This is captured in the words of Danish philosopher, Søren Aabye Kierkegaard:

"The truth is what ennobles" - Søren Kierkegaard

    "The more consciousness, the more self, the more consciousness, the more will; the more will, the more self" (Kierkegaard 1849: 29).

    True Storytelling (Larsen, Boje, & Bruun, 2020) is not the only path to an ethical life. True Storytelling seeks to engage with many other paths to the Greek Square (True, Beautiful, Just and Good life). Our True Storytelling Principles do this by making room for overcoming what is fake storytelling. Beyond making space for engagement with others, we have found that True Storytelling conversations can help bridge divides where this is possible, without compromising one's own truth.
   
    "Our Storytelling is perfectly designed in the media and education to produce the results of unsustainable thoughts, actions, habits, character and destiny of the downward sustainability spiral we are getting here and now. To change our destiny we need a better quantum storytelling by people in all kinds of organizations that organize to stop fooling us with grand narratives of so-called sustainable results. Instead we actually need to put sustainable thoughts into sustainable actions, make them habits, so that our character is answerable to the 'reality' of material ecological conditions that we are producing by our habits of food, housing, transport, and energy. Only then will we change to a sustainable destiny" (Reference).

FOUR PHASES OF TRUE STORYTELLING (with SDG example_

PHASE 1: WHAT IS TRUE STORYTELLING NOW?


This phase has two principles (Truth & Make Room), done in Session One of the modules.


Truth Principle 1: You yourself must be true and prepare the energy and effort for a sustainable future

Did you check it out?

Do you believe in it?

Do you have the knowledge to do it?

Can you sustain (get energized & not burn out) in long future?


But, we must ask ‘What is Truth’? There are many regimes of truth (Foucault). Each organization, and each family has several regimes of truth. The ‘Truth’ for Jens and David, has always been about Peirce’s self-correcting process of induction (see Boje & Rosile, 2020).


TSI needs a series of conversations about ‘what is truth.’ What is an ‘ethical truth’ is part of this conversation. It is part of the training and exploration in the Level 1 Foundation Module.



Make room Principle 2: True storytelling makes spaces respecting the stories already there

Can you co-create the ‘new story’?



PHASE TWO: How to Plan Future


This phase has two principles (Plot & Timing) and usually are focus of 2nd session of a module.


Plot Principle 3: You must create stories with a clear plot creating direction and help people prioritize

What is the ‘strategy’ story?

Does it have a beginning, middle & end

Does it express the priorities

Can it have a ‘twist’ (or punctum) that makes it memorable

How is it unique and different

Include the ‘why’ this is strategy is happening


Timing Principle 4: You must have timing

When is the opportune moment to launch?


PHASE THREE: WHAT AND WHEN OF DOING A CHANGE PROJECT?

Two principles 5: Help Stories Along, and 6: Staging the project implementation


Help stories along Principle 5: You must be able to help stories on their way and be open to experiment


How will you tell it differently to keep energy and momentum alive, from one year to the next?


Staging Principle 6: You must consider staging including scenography and artifacts


Do you have a staging for the launch of the strategy story, and/or the projects of partnership, etc.?


PHASE FOUR: REFLECT ON OUTCOMES

This phase has one principle, ‘embodied’ reflection.


Reflection Principle 7: You must reflect on the stories and how they create value



PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
    How or Modules Developed? Modules are developed around the True Storytelling Model, by module teams, who conduct several beta-audience events, usually for free, and the initiating module team writes a manual, develops the slide set, and then presents the finished module to the TSI founding members (Jens Larsen, David Boje, Lena Bruun, & Grace Ann Rosile) for final approval. Approved modules can then be taught by anyone who has (A) completed the Trainer of Trainers Module, and (B) has apprenticed (assisted) with one of the TSI founding members or with the module creators. No one else is authorized by TSI to teach said module to any clients unless they graduate with Trainer of Trainers certification.

    Certificate programs are offered at several levels (Basic for ©TSI Truth-Tellers, Advanced  for ©TSI Truth-Listeners, & ©TSI Truth-Seekers) with different rights and responsibilities of graduates.

  5. True Communication – how to communicate in the new normal? (Selling points: The media, leaders etc. need 7 principles to communicate in times of dis- and misinformation)

LEVEL ONE: 'TRUTH-TELLERS' CERTIFICATES
Certified completion of one or more Level One 'Truth-Tellers' Certificate Modules means a graduate of the Foundation Ethics Module, plus 3 Advanced Modules can practice the tools and constructs with Alumni Group meetings. Completion of a Level One certificate(s) does not authorize you to represent yourself as ©TSI consultant, facilitator, coach, or trainer. This is because modules get you started in living the story of an ethical life, but it takes much more training to achieve mastery of True Storytelling theory and practice to be an authorized ©TSI consultant, facilitator, coach, or trainer. Level One graduates can use TSI tools and exercises in their own living story path of life. Tools and exercises can also be practiced in ©TSI alumni support groups.
Graduate with Level One Certificaate, and we gift you a ©TSI Talking Stick with carved animal of your choice.

Requirements: Pick from List of ©TSI MODULES, to get your Basic Truth-Teller Certificate, plus do a project, and your presentation at conference, evaluated by one of the TSI founders.

Completion of a Level One certificate does not authorize you to represent yourself as ©TSI consultant, facilitator, coach, or trainer. For that you need to graduate from Level Two and are encouraged to enroll in Level Three.

LEVEL TWO ADVANCED 'TRUTH-LISTENERS' CERTIFICATES
At this level, modules of higher difficulty are done by candidates, whose project is to apprentice with one of the TSI founding members, or with certified TSI trainers.  Upon completion the trainer or consultant TSI tools and constructs can be licensed to be used with your own clients such as school systems, military, government departments, corporations, small businesses, or non-profits, and other entities. There is a requirement to stay current with ©TSI practices, new modules, and new tools.

Advanced modules  are delivered in four 90 minute Zoom sessions or where safe and healthy for all concerned, in face-to-face meetings.

In level II, the TSI Guides learn advanced skills that allow deeper understanding of tools and TSI principles.  For example, at Level II, Guides learn Antenarrative processes that pre-constitute the narratives and the living story webs participants are generating in breakouts, and in their own families and organizations. 

First, the Level II Guides help participants move out of polemics (abstracting) and into Grounding in True Storytelling conversations which encourage explorations of differences without blame, shame, or judgment.

Second Level II Guides learn skills in facilitating client and participant restorying. This goes way beyond just doing storyboarding. In Embodied Restorying, P5 (Helping Stories Along) requires a Guiding move from BEFORE to BEING with BETWEEN, BEYOND and making new BETS on the a Future that does not just roll a stuck in the past (trauma) into same old future.

P6 (Staging) for example moves the Between into the Bets for p3 Plot choice that is strategic to potentially take place

P5 (Helping Stories Along) gets folks unstuck from past, into the Being of the Present with less blurred vision, in order to plot a new story future. This is known as the Embodied Restorying Process

1. Recharacterize (received Organization identity) from how other organizations are telling it.

2. Externalize (re-label) Make the Problem the Problem, not the Person as the problem.

3. Sympathize (benefits) – of old story of or your organization has its payoffs

4. Revise (consequences) – What are the negative consequences, including the stereotypes of received organization identities being applied to you?

5. Strategize (Little Wow Moments of exception to Others' dominant master narratives); Reclaim Little Wow Moments

6. Restory (rehistoricizes the old dominant narratives by collecting Little Wow Moments into A 'New Story' of you several possibility futures), to not be stuck in the past, reliving one event

7. Publicize (support networking) e.g. letter writing, social media, celebratory events with supporters of your ‘New Story’ of future and potentiality, to stay in the ‘new world.’

True Storytelling Model

True Storytelling builds a bridge between strategic situation and the longing for meaning of the people as the basis of ethical strategy. The Ethical Strategy is agile/flexible planning with co-inquiry. We facilitate for co-understanding of the Situation, Strategy, and Basis. Services include documentation, goals, language, and staging to achieve passion/motivation, values, and meaning.

Partners
Partners such as universities, institutes, consulting companies, training companies, etc. can partner with ©TSI. They are listed on our website, receive author-access to the Truestorytelling.blog
And get updates on the tools, exercises, constructs of the TSI.  Contracts are negotiated based on number of users, number of events, and ways ©TSI is adapted to particular partners.

Sponsors
Another way to work with TSI is through donations that support the delivery of modules to groups of people who could not otherwise afford them. For example, if TSI does workshops for dealing the migrant situation, homelessness, or making dent in racism or sexism, then it makes sense to have sponsors.  It takes money to pay for our web development, our module and certificate program development takes research and experimenting, and design work.  There are bills to be paid. Due to tax and donation laws, we have established an LLC for North American sponsors, and another corporate entity for European sponsors.  Not all donations are tax deductible. It depends on laws where you are, and regulations we conform to about the content and attendees.

Alumni Program
As people graduate with the Level One Basic certificate and the Advanced certificate programs of
©TSI, there is a need to practice and stay updated. People can repeat modules, or take new ones. They can also join an alumni meeting of ©TSI and get some more practice in the tools. Over time, the number of tools of ©TSI grows to more than a hundred, with original exercises. Alumni groups are a great place to check-in to stay in tune with True Storytelling Principles.

The Founders of TSI, Jens Larsen, David Boje, Grace Ann Rosile, and Lena Bruun, have developed the True Storytelling Principles and Conversational Storytelling practices as a way to implement them in all types of organizations (companies, municipalities, education, and non-profits).

Storytelling in the Global Age makes the point 'There is No Planet B.' Organizations can begin to redesign their systems to be in harmony and balance with planetary capacities.

Theaters of Capitalism considers the business world and our current society through the lens of theater and role-playing. David Boje proposes that the prism of theater is adapted to reveal the dynamics of capitalism. His work is firmly grounded in critical studies and, in particular, in critical post-modernism.

'Sustainability Theater' is an increasingly popular notion.  For example, Arwa Mahdawi
uses 'Sustainability Theater' to tell the story:

There is also 'Sustainability Innovation Theater' done in 2019 Society of Conservation Biology meetings and 'Sustainability Theater' presentations at MODEX 2020 packaging meetings. And there are other educational programs on How to Create Sustainable Theater, and Sustainability In Theater. In, short True Storytelling needs to define exactly what it means by 'Sustainability Theater.'


TSI 'Sustainable Theater' is defined here as moving out of greenwash storytelling by applying 'True Storytelling' principles, and what Boje (2017) calls 'conscious capitalism' using a combination of festival and carnival theater to enact ethical practices. 

Plastic recycling is what Boje (2017) calls 'Spectacle Theater' by the plastics and many other industries doing 'greenwashing' (pretending to be sustainable, but doing it for PR purposes without making real changes in their supply chains). As Mahdawi (2020) reports, according to a PBS and NPR analysis, only 9% of all plastic ever made will be recycled. 

91% of it goes into land fills or into rivers, lakes, and oceans.
