The Power of Story in Assertiveness Training
I'm David Boje, and my journey with assertiveness training began at UCLA, where I taught both students and engineers at Hughes Aircraft. Through this experience, I discovered that storytelling is fundamental to being assertive. Some engineers were so hesitant in their communication that they would place performance reviews on their desk and ask staff to view them through the office window—a perfect example of why assertiveness training was crucial.
My innovative approach involved a two-column method: in the left column, engineers documented words actually spoken during interactions, while the right column captured thoughts left unspoken. The goal was simple but powerful—to gradually move those unspoken thoughts into the spoken column in future conversations, building confidence through practical communication strategies.
This method proved transformative. Years later, while delivering a keynote speech at the Toastmasters Annual Convention in Los Angeles, I encountered one of my former students—an engineer who had not only mastered assertiveness but had written a book about the skills he learned. Seeing him confidently selling his book at a convention table, and receiving his autographed copy with a heartfelt message, was one of my proudest moments as an educator.
Today, alongside my wife Grace Ann, we've evolved this methodology into ENTREPRENEUR'S STORYTELLING CONVERSATIONS seminars and organizational development and change (ODC) tools for triple-loop. Our approach combines assertiveness training with strategic storytelling, creating a comprehensive framework for improving corporate communication through collaborative inquiry and narrative techniques.
Outcomes and Benefits
22x Storytelling more memorable than facts alone
64% Storytelling increase in consumer trust
35% Storytelling has higher conversion rates
First, according to McKinsey & Company: Industry 4.0—also called the Fourth Industrial Revolution or 4IR—is the next phase in the digitization of the manufacturing sector, driven by disruptive trends including the rise of data and connectivity, analytic, human-machine interaction, and improvements in robotics.
Second, according to Forbes 2023 and small business 2024, the biggest challenge facing American corporations today is labor shortages and difficulties in retaining skilled employees, often referred to as "the war for talent," which is further amplified by factors like the tight labor market, rising inflation.
Recent research demonstrates storytelling's growing impact on business outcomes.
CONVERSATIONAL STORYTELLING for BUSINESS events are remembered up to 22 times more effectively than facts alone, while storytelling can increase product value perception by up to 2,706%. In today's digital-first environment, 73% of business leaders consider data interpretation and storytelling highly important skills for their teams.

Case Studies:
Fighting Modern Day Slavery
One that recognizes that organizations are made up of people, not just cogs in a machine. Absolutely. And what's amazing is that we have a real-world example of Boje and Rosile's article on Ensemble Leadership Theory (ELT0 in action, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, or CIW.
The CIW is a worker-based human rights organization that has been incredibly successful in combating modern-day slavery and improving working conditions for farm workers in Florida's tomato industry. They've achieved this through grassroots organizing, strategic alliances, and a deep understanding of the power of storytelling. That's truly remarkable.
One of their key strategies was building this really powerful coalition of allies, including consumers, students, religious organizations, and even major corporations in the food industry. They really leveraged the power of collective action and storytelling to create systemic change. It sounds like they embodied those four tests for deeper inquiry that we talked about earlier.
They clearly engaged in self-reflection, sought out diverse perspectives, drew on insights from multiple disciplines, and weren't afraid to experiment with new leadership strategies, such as ELT.
And the list of corporations they've engaged is impressive.
Yum. Brands, McDonald's, Burger King, Whole Foods Market, Subway, and even Walmart.
Those are some major players in the food industry. It shows that the principles of ELT can work even within large, complex organizations. It does.
The CIW's success really challenges those traditional notions of power and leadership. They demonstrate that lasting change often comes not from the top down, but from the ground up, through collaboration, empathy, and a commitment to shared values.
Their story shows that even seemingly powerless groups can create significant change. If they're willing to embrace these principles of conversation, storytelling, inquiry, and ensemble leadership, I'm curious to know more about their specific strategies and how they managed to bring such diverse groups together.
