Nike - Apr 1 2005 Nike disclosed the locaation of 705 factories in 51 countries, with concentrations in China/Hong Kong (133); Thailand (73); United States (49) and Indonesia (39). Collectively, the factories employ an estimated 650,000 workers (See Nike pdf file). This will make it much easier for independent monitors to begin the task of verifying labor conditions.

6/2/00 "nike-related" posting reported by Jeff Ballinger, Press for Change. Email Alert Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2000 07:05:10 -0400

About Nike's Transparency 101 [reports on Nike Factories]:

"Looks impressive -- until you think about what goes into those reports and
what gets left out. Any idea about the labor relations history at any of
those factories. Did any workers try to start unions and were fired? Why
not give us the factory addresses so we can check this out for ourselves?

Workers have never really asked Nike contractors for AUDITS, but thousands HAVE asked for unions and the basic respect and dignity that comes with bosses being forced to sit down and bargain things like production quotas and, while we're on the subject, why weren't production quotas on the list of problems that need fixing? It's certainly near the top of the list of complaints heard from workers when more transparent means are used to solicit complaints.

On the issue of reporting non-compliance. Nike notes two "worker rights"
problems on its compliance grid (www.Nikebiz.com). Both are in factories the U.S. and both concern the posting of certain Dept. of Labor information on bulletin boards. This is hardly the type of issue which most concerns human rights activists, but if I was doing some kind of "worker rights" reporting for PwC (paid by Nike), do you think I'd go around asking if workers had been punished for complaining or organizing protests?"
